Your first day in Kenya will be spent sight-seeing in Nairobi starting with a visit to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage in the morning, with lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee House, followed by a visit to the Karen Blixen museum and a trip to the Giraffe Centre before heading to camp for your evening meal. The camp is located in Karen, a leafy suburb of Nairobi and is well located for Nairobi sight-seeing. The camp has a selection of basic and luxury tents, cottages, a restaurant, pool, a really good souvenir shop and very pleasant landscaped gardens.
You’ll depart Nairobi for Laikipia (3.5 hours) and the Ol Pejeta conservancy, located in a vast plateau which has the highest density of large mammals in Kenya, including unusual species such as the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, the Lelwel hartebeest and also a small population of black rhino. You’ll spend two days at the luxury Sweet Waters tented camp, set on the foothills of Mount Kenya, with amazing views and close proximity to wildlife. You will spend your time here on game drives both during the day and night, lion tracking, or just relaxing in camp and watching the wildlife at the camp’s watering hole.
After breakfast, your guide will take you down the Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha and the Sopa Resort (3.5 hours), where you’ll arrive in time for lunch. The lodge is located close to the lake shore and has beautiful gardens and there is often wildlife wandering around such as bushbuck, zebra and giraffe. The rooms are spacious, Swahili style chalets either with a balcony or a glass fronted lounge area for relaxing and wildlife viewing. After lunch you’ll take a boat safari across the lake where you may see hippos and many species of birds including fish eagles, pelicans and sometimes flamingoes and there will also be a stop along the way at Crescent Island for a bush walk. After your boat safari and walk, you’ll retire to the lodge for the evening, have dinner and watch the hippos come up from the Lake to graze in Sopa’s grounds.
After breakfast, you’ll leave Naivasha and head to the open grassland of the Masai Mara (4.5 hours), rich in biodiversity and home to a large variety of bird species and wildlife, and offers great game viewing and bird watching opportunities. Your first stop will be at Basecamp’s Mara camp, where you’ll arrive in time for lunch. Basecamp is a small-tented camp with just 12 tents located on the banks of the Talek river. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with a solar heated hot water shower and a private terrace area overlooking the river. The camp has an eco-friendly policy, all waste is recycled and the camp is fully powered by a solar bank. After lunch you’ll head out for a game drive in the reserve where you will have the opportunity to see big cats and all the Big 5. The next day you can either head out on early morning and late afternoon game drives with lunch in camp or you can head out on a full day game drive with a picnic lunch.
On your third day in the Masai Mara you will head to the Naboisho conservancy where you will be staying for a night at Basecamp’s Wilderness camp. This is an authentic-style safari bush camp and as the name suggests it is located in the wilderness. The camp has just five tents, all with beds and flushing toilets and also a mess tent. The camp isn’t fenced and the local Masai warriors guard the camp both day and night. You’ll arrive in time for lunch before heading out for an afternoon game drive to explore the conservancy, which is arguably one of the most scenic areas in the whole of the Masai Mara. You’ll return to camp for dinner and then spend the evening at the campfire before an early turn in. The next morning you will wake early and head out for a safari walk with your Masai guides before returning to camp for a late breakfast. You can then relax in camp and watch the wildlife from the comfort of your opened tent before heading to Eagle View.
Your final two days in the Masai Mara will be spent at Basecamp’s Eagle View, which overlooks a natural waterhole from a fantastic ridge-top location and is frequented by many species of wild animals such as elephants, hippos and giraffes. The camp itself consists of nine double viewpoint luxury tents, each offering a king size double or two large twin beds, a private bathroom area featuring bio-flush toilets and two showers, one inside and one open-air ‘safari shower’. All rooms have a private elevated viewing deck offering exceptional views of Naboisho Conservancy. You’ll spend two days in the conservancy taking early morning and late afternoon game drives and also on your second night you’ll head out for a night game drive.
After a morning game drive you’ll return to camp for breakfast, then spend the rest of the morning relaxing in camp taking in the stunning views across the savannas.
Option 1. Leave the Mara late morning and head back to Nairobi by road (6 hours).
Option 2. Stay at camp for lunch, then mid-afternoon fly back to Nairobi ($200pp) where you’ll be met by one of our drivers. On arrival in Nairobi your driver will take you to the Carnivore restaurant for dinner before transferring you to the international airport for your flight back home.
